The clinic opened its doors as Urban Health and Wellness in April 2016, beginning as a volunteer-driven project housed at an Urban Recipe food co-op in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood.

Guided by the vision and leadership of Susan Whatley, the clinic was founded to address critical gaps in access to primary care for uninsured adults with limited financial resources. Today, The Urban Clinic of Atlanta (UCA) remains one of the few nonprofit clinics in Fulton County providing 100% free primary care services.

In 2026, UCA marks its 10th anniversary by merging with Good Shepherd Clinic, a similarly sized free clinic located in Morrow, GA.

With a combined 35 years of service to our communities, UCA is expanding its reach, increasing access to care, and strengthening its commitment to health equity. We look forward to driving greater impact and creating lasting change for the patients we serve in this next chapter.
